Artist with a love for colours

Wilhelm Bendz is the name of the Danish painter who was born in 1804 and died as early as in 1832. At a young age, he was admitted to Odense’s learning school, but dropped out and moved to Copenhagen due to lack of interest in book studies. Instead, Bendz had a keen interest in drawings and art. He was an apprentice to the famous C. W. Eckersberg and educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen during the period 1820-1825. Through his education and later work as a painter, Bendz developed a strong fondness and sense of colours and colour use. This is particularly evident in his pictures, which for his time, contain atypical an unnatural light. See, among other things “THE WAAGEPETERSEN FAMILY”, which is adorned with the most beautiful, saturated green colour.

A competent portrait painter

Despite the fact that Bendz died at the age of only 28, he still managed to portray several paintings of familiar everyday situations. In addition, he also painted portraits of artist colleagues, Ditlev Blunck and Christen Christensen. So Bendz not only had a keen eye for colour and lighting and everyday situations, but also possessed the ability to capture details for portrait paintings. The poster “A young artist” sums up Bendz’s thorough consideration when it comes to portraiture.
