The history of Aage Sikker Hansen

Aage Sikker Hansen was born in 1897 and died in 1955. Aage Sikker Hansen has been interested within the field of art since he was a child. When he finished school, he studied painting in Aalborg. In 1916, he passed his apprenticeship test and now became a trained painter. He worked as a theater painter at Odense Theater because of his education. However, it became clear to him that he did not want to be a painter for the rest of his life. For this reason, he began doing lithography where he learned all the latest printing methods.

Aage Sikker Hansen was now a draftsman and lithographer. In 1932, he held his very first exhibition. It took place at art dealer Chr. Larsen in Copenhagen. During the same year, he became part of the cartoonists at the Danish newspaper, Politiken, where he made drawings. Over the years, Sikker Hansen made many illustrations for book covers, short stories, posters and advertisements as well as a large collaboration with FDB Furniture.

His most well-known works

Aage Sikker Hansen was very popular as a poster artist. For example, he has drawn the popular and well-known posters with The Tobacco Girl and The Coffee Girl. Sikker Hansen often found inspiration for his motifs in daily life. Many people would call him an artist of the people because his motifs are relatable to many social layers of society. His poster art was so good right from the start of his career that his very first poster won 1st place in Politiken's art competition in 1930. Here, Sikker Hansen drew a traffic poster that attracted a lot of attention with its relatively untraditional design. The poster shows a small child walking across the street in the shadow of a large wagon wheel. Maybe it was just the untraditional design that made him win the first prize. The following years after the competition, he made many popular posters that you can find right here.
