In connection with the inauguration of "Zoological Gardens Elephant House" or "The House of Thick Hides, Elephants, Rhinos and Hippos" in 1914, Sven Henriksen (1890-1935) created this poster. Prior to the inauguration of the house, the public through the media had been interested in the hippo Jeppe's life in the garden. He had come to the zoo as a youth in 1905, but in 1913 he suddenly went crazy, and you could therefore not move him to the new house. With exotic palms against an orange sky and Jeppe in roaring silhouette, Sven Henriksen portrays dramatically Jeppe's rejection of the new plant. The poster here is part of the Zoo in Copenhagen's special tradition of posters. The garden was founded in 1859, and the noble preserved poster in the zoo collection dates from 1874.
