Andy Warhol
The American painter Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was one of the main forces behind the emergence of the Pop Art movement in the 1960s.
Here, the aesthetics of advertising is integrated into kunsten, and the boundaries between high and low culture are blurred.
Women's shoes, silkscreens and photography
As an artist, Warhol is fixated on fame, the everyday and American culture. He painted money, dollar signs, food, women's shoes, celebrities and newspaper clippings.
The subjects were clearly inspired by advertising and comics, and were often repeated on large canvases. For Warhol, it was not only about depicting mass production in kunsten, but also about mass producing kunsten.
He did this by using silkscreen printing. However, from the 60s onwards, Warhol moved more towards the photographic image, creating a series of striking works.
