The satirical universe of Robert Storm Petersen (1882-1949) is known in particular from his series of drawings and text in newspapers such as Ekstra Bladet and the daily newspaper B.T., but he also painted watercolors and oil paintings, and drew many posters throughout his career.
The painting Lola with the subtitle Cirque Médrano from approx. 1912, after which this poster is reproduced, is one of Storm P.'s first paintings with motifs taken from the circus world - a theme he often returned to.
Cirque Médrano was a famous circus in Paris, and the girl was supposed to be the German singer Lola Herbert, who performed at Scala in 1912.
