Since the opening of Tivoli in Copenhagen in 1843, the world-famous amusement garden's adventurous universe has been depicted on posters a tradition that today is continued by some of the best Danish artists. The Tivoli posters give a unique insight into the development of poster art from the mid-1800s to the present. Erik Nordgreen's (1921-1986) poster from 1945 shows Harlequin, who appears on the stage in the Pantomime Theater. The contrast between the illuminated front of the figure and the shady back part creates an evocative and theatrical depiction of Harlequin as both a mysterious and romantic character.
