Andy Warhol
The American painter Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was one of the main forces behind the rise of the Pop Art movement in the 1960s.
Here, the aesthetics of advertising are integrated into art, and the boundaries between fine and low culture are blurred.
Women's shoes, silk screen printing and photography
As an artist, Warhol is fixed on the fame, the everyday and the American culture. He painted money, dollar signs, foods, women's shoes, familiar and newspaper clippings.
The motifs were clearly inspired by advertisements and comics, and were often repeated on large canvases. For Warhol, it was not just about depicting mass production in art, but also mass-producing art.
He did this using the silk print. From the 60s onwards, Warhol moved more towards the photographic image, where he created a large number of distinctive works.
